On the worst-case complexity of the gradient method with exact line search for smooth strongly convex functions

چکیده
We consider the gradient (or steepest) descent method with exact line search applied to a strongly convex function with Lipschitz continuous gradient. We establish the exact worst-case rate of convergence of this scheme, and show that this worst-case behavior is exhibited by a certain convex quadratic function. We also extend the result to a noisy variant of gradient descent method, where exact line-search is performed in a search direction that differs from negative gradient by at most a prescribed relative tolerance. The proof is computer-assisted, and relies on the resolution of semidefinite programming performance estimation problems as introduced in the paper [Y. Drori and M. Teboulle. Performance of first-order methods for smooth convex minimization: a novel approach. Mathematical Programming, 145(1-2):451-482, 2014].

Smooth strongly convex interpolation and exact worst-case performance of first-order methods
We show that the exact worst-case performance of fixed-step first-order methods for unconstrained optimization of smooth (possibly strongly) convex functions can be obtained by solving convex programs. Finding the worst-case performance of a black-box first-order method is formulated as an optimization problem over a set of smooth (strongly) convex functions and initial conditions. We develop c...
متن کاملAn Inexact Accelerated Proximal Gradient Method for Large Scale Linearly Constrained Convex SDP
The accelerated proximal gradient (APG) method, first proposed by Nesterov for minimizing smooth convex functions, later extended by Beck and Teboulle to composite convex objective functions, and studied in a unifying manner by Tseng, has proven to be highly efficient in solving some classes of large scale structured convex optimization (possibly nonsmooth) problems, including nuclear norm mini...
متن کاملNew Quasi-Newton Optimization Methods for Machine Learning
This thesis develops new quasi-Newton optimization methods that exploit the wellstructured functional form of objective functions often encountered in machine learning, while still maintaining the solid foundation of the standard BFGS quasi-Newton method. In particular, our algorithms are tailored for two categories of machine learning problems: (1) regularized risk minimization problems with c...
متن کاملWorst case complexity of direct search under convexity
In this paper we prove that the broad class of direct-search methods of directional type, based on imposing sufficient decrease to accept new iterates, exhibits the same worst case complexity bound and global rate of the gradient method for the unconstrained minimization of a convex and smooth function. More precisely, it will be shown that the number of iterations needed to reduce the norm of ...
متن کاملAn Adaptive Accelerated Proximal Gradient Method and its Homotopy Continuation for Sparse Optimization
We consider optimization problems with an objective function that is the sum of two convex terms: one is smooth and given by a black-box oracle, and the other is general but with a simple, known structure. We first present an accelerated proximal gradient (APG) method for problems where the smooth part of the objective function is also strongly convex. This method incorporates an efficient line...
